OLEK

Olek was born Agata Oleksiak in Poland and graduated from A. Mickiewicz University in Poland with a degree in Cultural Studies. In NYC she rediscovered her ability to crochet and, since then, has started her crocheted journey. Olek believes she chose crochet as her artistic method in order to do two things at once: watch movies and make art. Her work has been exhibited both in the US and internationally and she has been awarded numerous residencies and awards including the Ruth Mellon Award for Sculpture. She was featured in the 9th Istanbul Biennale and in 2010 she received a significant commission from the Brooklyn Museum to do a one-day community based art project.
